FirstShowing.net has a report on the upcoming film, Astroboy. As many of you know, Astroboy is one of the icons of Japanese animation. However, the Astroboy film is being directed by Colin Brady and the animation is being handled by Hong Kong’s Imagi Animation Studios. Imagi recently did the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.
While the reviewer states that the TMNT film “was one of the most comparable CGI movies to a Pixar movie that I’ve ever seen” as a professional animator, I would strongly disagree. Pixar stands head and shoulders above every other studio out there, bar-none. I would place TMNT somewhere squarely between Hoodwinked and Shrek in terms of quality.
It will be interesting to see how they interpret one of the most beloved Japanese characters of all time.
What do you think? Can a foreigner do justice to Astroboy?
