I just wanted to take a moment to update everyone on the current status here.  The latest news is this:  Hitomi is becoming a US citizen!  We’ve filed the forms and yesterday took a trip to Indianapolis for the first step in the process.

The next step will be the actual citizenship test, where she’ll be tested on civics as well as English.  If she passes those tests, she’ll be scheduled to be sworn in within 90 days of the test.

It’s an interesting and exciting process.

But the question is this:  If you lived in Japan and had the opportunity to become a Japanese citizen, would you?

Past tense: うれしかった

事（こと）＝thing(s)

仮免許（かりめんきょ）＝learner’s permit
Sometimes we just say / write “仮免（かりめん）”

もらった＝got, received
Present tense: もらう

がんばって＝to try one’s best and
Root word: がんばる ＝to try one’s best
がんばって ＝がんばる＋そして

練習して（れんしゅうして）＝to practice and
Root word: 練習する（れんしゅうする）＝to practice
練習して＝練習する＋そして

夏（なつ）＝summer

までには＝by

免許（めんきょ）＝(in this diary) driver’s license
免許 is shorten for 運転免許（うんてんめんきょ）

取るぞ（とるぞ）＝I am going to get it
Root word:取る（とる）＝to get

ぞadds force and sometimes indicates command.
If you put ぞ at the end of a sentence, it sounds like you are determined to do something.

For example:

絶対東大に行くぞ！（ぜったいとうだいにいくぞ！）
I am definitely going to Toudai (Tokyo University)!

すごくひさしぶりのにっきです。さいきん、いそがしくって。ごめんなさいね。

They are imported items therefore they are a little bit pricey, but I think an occasional indulgence doesn’t hurt.
